Dry Skin Causes
Skin becomes dry when it loses more water than it can retain. Low humidity, hot or prolonged washing, harsh cleansers, frequent handwashing, ageing and some medicines or health conditions can all contribute. The most useful first steps are gentler washing, a suitable fragrance-free moisturiser and attention to persistent or inflamed symptoms.

Dry skin begins with the barrier
The outermost layer of skin works like a carefully arranged wall: skin cells provide structure while lipids help limit water escaping into the environment. When that organisation is disrupted, water leaves more easily and the surface can feel rough, tight or itchy.
This is why simply adding water is not enough. A long bath may temporarily wet the skin, but evaporation and cleanser exposure can leave it feeling drier afterwards. Moisturisers work best when they combine water-attracting ingredients, smoothing emollients and ingredients that reduce water loss.
Environment and washing habits are common triggers
Cold air, low humidity and heated rooms can all increase the challenge of holding water in the skin. Summer is not automatically protective: air-conditioning, sun exposure and swimming can also leave skin dry or irritated.
Daily habits can amplify the effect. Long hot showers, vigorous towel drying, deodorant soaps and repeated use of foaming cleansers remove surface oils or irritate already-dry skin. A shorter warm shower, gentle cleanser used where needed and moisturiser applied while skin is still slightly damp is a more barrier-conscious pattern.

Age, body area and health can change the picture

Some medicines and medical conditions can contribute to dry or thickened skin. Persistent dryness can also be part of atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, ichthyosis or another diagnosis. A product review cannot identify the cause; the pattern, duration and associated symptoms matter.
Build the response around the likely trigger
If dryness follows winter heating or a change in cleanser, simplify first: shorten washing, switch to a gentle fragrance-free cleanser and apply a cream or ointment promptly afterwards. Reapply to hands and other exposed areas whenever they feel dry.
