Independent, ingredient-led skincare guidance How we review
REVIEW PROCESS

A repeatable method,
not a borrowed star rating.

01 / DISCOVERY01

Products begin with a real reader need

We define the page intent before choosing products: for example, everyday body dryness, cracked hands, fragrance avoidance, rough feet or a lighter facial texture. A product belongs only when it can answer that intent without stretching its stated purpose.

Discovery may use manufacturer ranges, current Amazon.com listings, established retailer categories, dermatologist resources and gaps within our existing brand coverage. Popularity can reveal what readers are considering; it does not determine the winner.

  • Match the exact use area and format.
  • Avoid ten near-identical pack sizes presented as ten choices.
  • Include meaningful price and texture alternatives.
  • Keep medicines and cosmetics in separate categories.
02 / VERIFICATION02

We identify the exact variant

Product names often vary between the United States, United Kingdom and European markets. Before writing, we check the full name, format, stated use, size, fragrance wording, highlighted ingredients and current manufacturer positioning.

A retailer page is cross-checked with the brand where possible. If an ingredient list is incomplete or a formula may have changed, we say so and direct readers to the packaging they receive.

03 / FRAMEWORK03

The five-part scoring lens

A score is a compact summary of category-specific judgment. It is not a medical grade and should never override individual tolerance or professional advice.

Weighting changes slightly by category. A foot cream may be rewarded for targeted roughness support, while a face moisturiser must also layer sensibly with sunscreen and other products.

  • Formula logic: does the ingredient and format strategy make sense for the intended job?
  • Dry-skin suitability: humectant, emollient and occlusive support in context.
  • Tolerance context: fragrance, common sensitisation concerns and formula complexity.
  • Use experience: texture, dispenser, area suitability and realistic repeat application.
  • Value and availability: pack size, price position and ease of finding the exact variant.
04 / ASSESSMENT04

What a dedicated review contains

Each review records the evidence available for the exact product, then explains who it may suit, where it is less convincing, the role of its key ingredients, texture expectations and relevant alternatives.

When we have not conducted controlled hands-on testing, we do not invent sensory results, before-and-after outcomes or wear claims. Manufacturer descriptions are attributed; editorial inferences are identified as such.

  • A concise verdict and category-fit score.
  • Pros and limitations with equal visibility.
  • Key formula cues linked to ingredient explainers.
  • A relevant Best Creams comparison and skin-condition guide.
  • Source and update notes.
05 / RANKINGS05

How a review differs from a ‘best’ list

A review asks whether one exact product makes sense for its intended user. A roundup asks how ten products compare for one defined need. A strong product can score well yet rank below a more versatile or better-value option in a particular list.

Rankings are reviewed when a key formula changes, a product is discontinued, a meaningfully better option becomes available or the category intent changes. Retailer stock movement alone does not rewrite the editorial method.

06 / COMMERCIAL LINKS06

Recommendations and revenue

Some product links may earn commission from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to the reader. This does not affect inclusion, exclusion, score or rank. The disclosure appears near commercial links and is explained again in our disclaimer.

We do not treat commission as evidence. If an appropriate product has no monetised link, it can still be included and recommended.

  • Editorial criteria come first.
  • Price and availability can change after publication.
  • External sellers remain responsible for fulfilment and returns.
  • Readers should verify the exact product before buying.
07 / UPDATES07

Review, correction and removal

Every page carries a publication or review date. Material updates should re-check the relevant evidence, not simply refresh the date. We correct factual errors and may remove a recommendation when the exact variant cannot be verified or no longer fits the intent.

To challenge a fact, send the URL, wording and a primary source. We assess evidence, not pressure, and do not exchange edits for payment or product access.
