BRAND FIELD GUIDEPETROLATUM OINTMENT EXPERT

Aquaphor
moisturisers for dry skin.

A narrow, highly recognisable ointment-led brand—excellent for targeted occlusion, much less compelling as the only moisturiser for every body area.

01 / EDITORIAL VERDICT

Where Aquaphor
fits best.

Aquaphor’s focus is its advantage. Healing Ointment uses 41% petrolatum with mineral oil, ceresin, panthenol, glycerin, bisabolol and lanolin alcohol to create a flexible skin-protectant product. It is excellent for small dry or chapped areas, but greasiness and lanolin sensitivity make it a specialised final layer rather than a universal daily cream.

STRENGTHSClear OTC skin-protectant roleStrong targeted occlusionFragrance- and preservative-free hero productMultiple sizes and practical family use
LIMITATIONSGreasy finish is impractical for large daytime areasHealing Ointment contains lanolin alcoholThe brand name is often used as shorthand for petrolatum, but the formula is not plain petroleum jellyOcclusion is not treatment for infection or an unexplained rash

03 / FORMULA PATTERNS

What the range
consistently does.

Aquaphor Healing Ointment is not identical to Vaseline. Petrolatum provides the primary skin-protectant effect, while mineral oil, ceresin, panthenol, glycerin, bisabolol and lanolin alcohol change texture and formula complexity.

That extra complexity can make the ointment more flexible and cosmetically useful for some people. It also means confirmed lanolin allergy is a meaningful reason to choose plain white petrolatum instead.

04 / HOW TO CHOOSE

Start with the job,
not the logo.

Use a thin amount over damp skin or a tolerated cream on lips, knuckles, heels or other small intact dry areas. A tiny layer is usually enough.

Do not use an ointment to self-treat infected-looking cracks, significant burns or non-healing wounds. Those need appropriate medical advice.

06 / COMMON QUESTIONS

Before you choose
the brand.

Is Aquaphor the same as Vaseline?+

No. Both use petrolatum, but Aquaphor Healing Ointment is a multi-ingredient formula containing 41% petrolatum plus panthenol, glycerin, mineral oil and lanolin alcohol. Vaseline Original is 100% white petrolatum.

Does Aquaphor contain lanolin?+

Healing Ointment contains lanolin alcohol. Anyone with confirmed lanolin allergy should check with a clinician or choose a lanolin-free alternative.

Can Aquaphor be used as an all-over moisturiser?+

It can be, but its greasy ointment texture is usually more practical on small very dry areas or as a final layer over cream.
