Understanding Eczema
Eczema describes inflammatory skin conditions that can cause dryness, itch and rash. Atopic dermatitis is a common form, but not every itchy dry patch is eczema. Moisturisers support the barrier and may reduce dryness; they do not replace diagnosis or prescribed anti-inflammatory treatment during a flare.

- Location offers context: Patterns vary with age and eczema type. Face, neck, elbow and knee folds, hands and widespread body areas may be involved.
- Seek care for weeping, crusting, warmth, pain, rapidly worsening rash, sleep-disrupting itch or eczema that is not controlled by the existing plan.
What eczema means

Look at pattern, location and timing
Patterns vary with age and eczema type. Face, neck, elbow and knee folds, hands and widespread body areas may be involved.
The surrounding context matters as much as the visible surface. Dry weather, heat, sweat, fragrance, irritating products, allergens and stress can contribute, although trigger patterns are individual.
- Note when the change started and whether it is spreading.
- Record itch, pain, heat, bleeding or discharge.
- Consider new products, medicines, illness, weather and repeated exposure.
Where moisturiser fits
Choose a fragrance-free cream or ointment, apply after bathing and whenever skin feels dry, and keep prescribed treatments in the order advised by a clinician.
Product selection should follow the skin's current state. Colloidal oatmeal, glycerin, petrolatum, ceramides and dimethicone can support a moisturising formula. Tolerance to oat, preservatives and botanical extracts still varies.
When self-care should stop
Seek care for weeping, crusting, warmth, pain, rapidly worsening rash, sleep-disrupting itch or eczema that is not controlled by the existing plan.
If you are unsure what you are looking at, avoid escalating active products while you arrange appropriate advice.
Common questions,
carefully answered.
Is eczema always just dryness?+
No. Moisturisers support the barrier and may reduce dryness; they do not replace diagnosis or prescribed anti-inflammatory treatment during a flare.
Can moisturiser help eczema?+
It may support comfort and water retention. Its role depends on the cause and does not replace medical treatment.
What information should I take to an appointment?+
Note the start date, body areas, symptoms, triggers, products and medicines, plus photographs showing how the pattern has changed.
